What is Display Stream Compression (DSC)?

Your checker result says a mode is "SUPPORTED WITH CONDITIONS - DSC required", or you've seen "DSC" in a monitor's spec sheet. What is it, and does it cost you anything?
The short answer
Display Stream Compression (DSC) is a VESA standard that compresses the video signal so a high-bandwidth mode fits down a link that couldn't carry it uncompressed - for example 4K 144Hz or 1440p 240Hz over DisplayPort 1.4. VESA describes it as "visually lossless". It needs to be supported by both the GPU (encoder) and the monitor (decoder), and it's normally automatic once both ends have it.
Why it exists
DisplayPort 1.4 carries roughly 25.9 Gbps of usable data. An uncompressed 4K 144Hz 8-bit signal needs more than that. DSC reduces the data rate (VESA allows up to about a 3:1 ratio) so the mode transmits within the link's limit. HDMI 2.1 also uses DSC for its highest modes.
Does it reduce quality?
VESA's testing and independent reviews generally find DSC visually indistinguishable from an uncompressed signal in normal use. It is a fixed-rate, low-latency codec designed for exactly this. It is not the same as chroma subsampling (4:2:2 / 4:2:0), which is a more visible trade-off that some setups fall back to when DSC isn't available.
How to tell if DSC is active
- Check that your GPU supports it: NVIDIA RTX 20-series or newer, and recent AMD Radeon cards. Older cards (e.g. GTX 10-series) have no DSC encoder.
- Check the monitor's spec sheet for "DSC" on the relevant input.
- Avoid adapters and MST hubs that aren't DSC-aware - they can break the mode.
- The monitor's on-screen menu sometimes shows the active signal format; some GPUs show it in the control panel.
- Run a check for your exact GPU and monitor - it tells you if the mode needs DSC and whether both ends are confirmed to support it.
When we say DSC is only "estimated"
If a manufacturer doesn't publish an official timing row for a DSC mode, we won't claim it works purely from a 3:1 assumption - that result stays UNKNOWN. See Methodology.
