HDMI vs DisplayPort for high refresh rate monitors

You have both an HDMI and a DisplayPort cable, and the same monitor seems to behave differently on each. Which should you use for high-refresh gaming at 1440p or 4K?
The short answer
On a desktop PC, DisplayPort is usually the safer choice for high refresh rates, because most gaming monitors are designed to hit their top rate on DP. Use HDMI when the monitor's HDMI port is explicitly HDMI 2.1 and rated for the mode you want, or when you need HDMI features like eARC or console compatibility.
Why the same monitor differs by port
- Different link bandwidth. DisplayPort 1.4 provides about 25.9 Gbps of usable payload. HDMI 2.0 provides about 14.4 Gbps; HDMI 2.1 can provide up to about 42.6 Gbps - but only if that specific port is a full 48 Gbps (FRL 48) implementation.
- Manufacturers wire ports to different ceilings. A monitor may run 4K 240Hz on DisplayPort (with DSC) but only 4K 144Hz or 120Hz on its HDMI input, or vice versa. The spec sheet's "maximum resolution" is often per-port.
- DSC availability differs. Whether a port can use compression to reach a mode depends on both ends supporting DSC on that connector.
- "HDMI 2.1" is not one bandwidth. See the dedicated guide - an HDMI 2.1 port can run anywhere from 24 to 48 Gbps.
How to decide
- Look up the monitor's spec sheet and note the maximum resolution + refresh rate listed for each connector separately.
- Check your GPU's outputs. NVIDIA 40-series and earlier use DisplayPort 1.4a (HBR3); 50-series adds UHBR20. Most modern NVIDIA/AMD cards have HDMI 2.1.
- Pick the connector where both the GPU output and the monitor input are rated for your target mode.
- Use a certified cable for that connector and bandwidth.
- Run a check for your exact pair - it reports the recommended connector and whether DSC is needed.
